Pool safety checklist:
- is my pool fenced?
- is my fence well maintained?
- does my pool gate close and latch by itself from any open position?
- does my pool gate open outwards away from the pool and never get propped open, tied back or otherwise obstructed from automatically closing?
- does my pool gate have a latch release at least 1.5 metres above the ground or covered so a small child cannot open it?
- are all pools near me properly fenced?

Pool fencing laws allow the property boundary fence to form part of the pool fence. Like any pool fence, the boundary fence must be at least 1.2 m high and constructed in accordance with the fencing standards so as to inhibit access to the pool area by a toddler. No climbable objects on either side of the fence are permitted within a radius of 1.2 m measured from the top of the fence. If the boundary fence exists and does not satisfy the fencing standards, it cannot be used as part of the pool fence.

Young children should not be able to:
- get over or under the pool fence
- get through the pool fence
- get through the pool gate
